Give them actual content
A grid of products is not content. Search engines and AI systems have nothing to work with. Add, above or below the grid:- A short introduction stating what the collection contains and who it is for — two or three sentences, factual
- Buying guidance — what distinguishes the options, how to choose between them
- Genuine FAQ content where real questions exist
One collection, one intent
A collection should map to one thing people search for. Where several collections serve the same intent, they compete with each other and split link equity.- Merge overlapping collections
- Do not create a collection for every possible attribute combination — that is faceted navigation, and it should not be indexable
- Create collections for demand that actually exists, verified against search data
Titles and meta
- Title should state the collection plainly and match query language
- Avoid identical meta descriptions generated from a template across every collection
- Include the product count or defining attribute where it adds information
Handle pagination correctly
Deep collections paginate, and pagination frequently blocks crawlers from reaching products beyond page one.- Ensure paginated pages are crawlable and link to each other
- Do not
noindexpaginated pages if they are the only path to those products - Do not canonicalise page 2+ to page 1 — this hides those products entirely
- Confirm every product is reachable within a few clicks of the homepage
Internal linking
Collection pages are the natural hub between homepage and products.- Link to collections from the homepage and navigation
- Link between related collections
- Link from articles to the relevant collection rather than always to a product
